For an inexpensive college student gift, try a mobile phone skin, a DVD, an optical mouse, a magazine subscription, or a reusable water bottle.

Need to find a great holiday gift or Christmas gift for a college student, or a gift for a birthday or other occasion? Thanks to the economic downturn, gift-giving budgets are tight this year for everyone, so purchasing the hottest gifts for college students might not be an option. Fortunately, college students tend to need everything (especially during a recession), so cheap gifts for students will be more than appreciated.

So what kinds of inexpensive gifts will college students be needing and wanting during the 2009-2010 school year? Here are a few suggestions.

Mobile Phone Skins

Recession or not, a cell phone has become a necessity in the lives of college students. These days, the hottest and most practical ways to protect a cell phone is a mobile phone skin. These protective coverings are easy to apply and basically come in two forms: calendared, which are simple coverings made for the short term, and cast vinyl, which is more permanent. Phone skins come in endless colors and styles and can easily be purchased for under $20.

Reusable Water Bottles

Water bottles are great gifts for college students because they reflect two trends. First, they're cheap, and rarely cost more than about $15. And second, they're incredibly green. They can also save a student quite a bit of money on purchasing bottles of water and other beverages around campus. Water bottles come in many varieties, of course, but the brand of choice on most campuses in Nalgene.

DVDs

Watching movies never goes out of style. Unfortunately, $10 a pop is quite a bit of money for a college student to go to a theater, so watching movies in a dorm room or student apartment is more popular than ever. DVDs are super easy to return too, so the student can trade in the DVD for one more to his or her liking if necessary.

Optical Mouses

A student doesn't have to be a techie to appreciate a mouse that's easy to use with a laptop or desktop computer, as just about everyone has to do this these days. Unless a student is seriously into technology (and even then, perhaps), a terrific mouse can be purchased for under $25, and possibly for even under $10. For a bonus gift, throw in a funky mouse pad.

Magazines Subscriptions

Magazines are one of those small luxuries that many people love and really don't need, and college students probably don't have the money to buy many of them. However, they aren't that expensive and can make great gifts. With all the piles of dry, boring reading a student has to do, something mindless and fun can be a nice way to relax at the end of a study session.

iTunes Gift Cards

With the popularity of iPhones and iPhone applications, many gift givers are disappointed to hear that they cannot give someone an app as a gift. Only the person who owns the phone can purchase apps, and they're non-transferable. Fortunately, this is where the iTunes gift certificate comes in, which can be used to purchase applications, and since apps rarely are more than $5, this means a small gift card can buy a fun little bundle. Of course, iTunes gift cards can be used to buy iTunes as well, which are even cheaper than apps.

Cheap Gift Ideas for College Students

Sure, a typical college student would probably love a new laptop or iPhone or car, but in lieu of this, there are plenty of other inexpensive options that will be highly appreciated. For more suggestions, see Holiday Gifts for College Students Under $10.
