This is a preview of four companies who hire campus reps and what they generally look for in a solid candidate.

Campus rep jobs are a great way for college students to build their resumes. Barriers for entry are low, with little or no previous relevant work experience required. Companies in many industries offer campus rep programs and are constantly on the lookout for new campus reps as older reps graduate.

Companies That Offer Campus Rep Jobs

These four companies offer campus rep programs as of July 2008.

BestofCampus. This company produces student savings guides. The company needs help in the areas of advertising sales, event planning and promotions, and distribution. As part of the application process, college students will be asked to indicate their major and whether or not they live on or off campus.

CampusCareerCenter. This is an online job bank that allows companies to browse college student resumes. Naturally, this company is in need of quality college student resumes to meet employer demand. They need campus reps to spread the word about their services, meet with students and faculty, distribute marketing materials, and coordinate various campus activities. CampusCareerCenter will want to see a candidate’s resume, including a list of extracurricular activities.

Becker CPA Review. Becker offers a leading CPA exam prep course. Campus reps operate just like any other rep – they must organize events, distribute marketing materials, and post flyers around campus; however, their form of payment is unique. Reps who successfully complete their job are rewarded with a free CPA review course for themselves. Of course, this means that only students destined to take the CPA exam (typically accounting majors) should apply.

mtvU. According to the mtvU website, mtvU is a 24/7 media network affiliated with MTV Networks. The company wants campus reps who are up to date on campus hot-spots, music, and other trends. The company only allows up to two reps per campus.

Desirable Traits for Campus Representatives to Have

Being a campus rep takes initiative. The job requires a people-person who is willing to pound the pavement and meet new people. College students who are considering becoming campus reps should ideally possess the following traits as well:

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Strong social ties within the campus community (i.e. involvement in student organizations or other extracurricular activities)
  • Leadership abilities. This is especially important if student is chosen to lead a team of reps.
  • Outgoing nature. Students don’t necessarily have to be chatterboxes, but they should be able to step outside of their comfort zone and speak to people they don’t know.

During the application or inquiry process, students should expect to provide personal data such as a resume, a list of extracurricular activities, and perhaps validation of current enrollment.

College students with the traits listed above may be perfectly suited for college campus rep jobs. The potential financial rewards for being a college campus rep are great; many compensation plans are results driven, so better results equates to more money.
