Asking a college boyfriend what he wants for the holidays is a good strategy. If that fails, try a coupon book, sports tickets, sweaters, video games, or home basics.

Need a Christmas or Hanukkah gift idea for a college boyfriend? Of course, one simple strategy for finding out what he wants is to ask. After all, some men really appreciate the honest approach, so why play games with trying to figure out what he wants? If that fails, however, another good idea is to ask friends and family members what he might want, or to check on website wish lists.

For many girlfriends, though, the surprise is half the fun, along with the originality of coming up with something unique and genuinely appreciated. Here are some ideas for holiday gifts for a college boyfriend.

The Boyfriend Holiday Coupon Book

It's a stereotype to say that guys aren't as materialistic as girls. That said, there really are quite a few guys out there who don't particularly feel the need to accumulate stuff, and would much rather have some time and attention.

For a guy who falls into the "non-materialistic" category, a personalized holiday coupon book might do the trick and save quite a bit of money as well. Each handmade coupon can entitle the boyfriend to one free "service," such as a massage, a home-cooked meal, a basket of cookies, cleaning services (car, dorm room, etc.), laundry, sewing, help with homework or a workout, or anything else he might need. (X-rated coupons, of course, are optional.)

Holiday Gifts for Sports Fans

Again, it's absolutely a stereotype to say that everyone's boyfriend is a sports fanatic. However, for the boyfriends out there who are, sports related gifts can be a very thoughtful gift. For starters, there's nothing like a pair of tickets to a big game (especially if the girlfriend gets a great date out of this). Sports memorabilia, clothing, or athletic equipment comes in many different price ranges.

Holiday Gifts for Video Game Fans

There are boyfriends who spend their Sunday afternoons watching football games with the guys, and then are there boyfriends who spend their Sunday afternoons playing video games with the guys. If the latter sounds familiar, a video game (for computer or console) might be just the gift. This is a case where asking his friends might be a good idea in order to find out what the next game is on his wish list. Of course, if funds are available, a new game console will be quite the memorable gift.

Sweaters and Other "Keep Warm" Items

The sweater may be the ultimate timeless girlfriend gift for "keeping him warm." Other warm, cozy gifts send a similarly sweet message: a cozy bathrobe, a nice college sweatshirt, a fraternity sweatshirt, mittens, scarves, earmuffs, blankets, and so forth. Extra kudos, of course, for cozy items handmade by the girlfriend. Monograms are a nice touch.

Domestic Survival Items

Many young men are perfect capable of taking care of themselves in the kitchen, the bathroom, etc. However, plenty of them could use a hand, a some decent domestic tools for a struggling young guy may be exactly the gift that's needed. Consider a gift of decent sheets or towels for a guy whose linens are filled with holes, or a cooking basics kit, or a cookbook, or sewing kit, or anything basic to help him learn how to take care of himself away from Mom.

Holiday Gift Ideas for College Boyfriends

Of course, everyone's boyfriend is different, and these "stock" ideas might not be perfect. Nonetheless, plenty of college guys out there would be thrilled with a coupon book, sports tickets, video games, sweaters, and stuff to help them find their way around the kitchen.
