Fortunately, there are several ways college students can cope with feeling homesick. The following sections describe these coping strategies. Spend Time With New College FriendsAn easy way to avoid feeling homesick is to spend time with new college friends. Students can invite their friends for a night out on the college town. They can also invite their friends to go out to lunch where they can talk about feeling homesick. Talking about feeling homesick might even help the student to feel better. And, spending time with new people will help students make friends in college. Join a Student Club or Attend a Campus EventIf a student is feeling homesick, he or she could join a student club to become involved with the college. Participating in a group might help a student feel more connected to their campus and thus less homesick. Also, homesick students can attend campus events. A campus event provides a distraction for the student and encourages him or her to think about something other than home. Focus on Schoolwork and Study for ClassesA simple way to avoid thinking about home is to focus on schoolwork and to study for classes. Whenever a student begins to think about home and feel homesick, he or she can read course material, study for exams, and even make study cards for future studying. Studying for college courses will not only distract the student but also help him or her earn good grades. Schedule Phone or Computer Conversations with Family and FriendsHomesick students can schedule phone or computer conversations with their family and friends. Speaking with people from home might help a student cope with their homesickness, and speaking with family and friends is also a great way to cope with stress in college. If a student has access to a web camera, and so does someone from home, then he or she can also see the person they are talking to. Most students experience some form of homesickness during college. Fortunately, there are several ways students can cope with homesickness in college, such as by scheduling phone conversations with family and friends. Additionally, students can focus on their schoolwork, join student groups, and spend time with friends to cope with homesickness.
