Many college students struggle with graduating from college on time. The following tips offer ways students can overcome this challenge.

Registering for classes and getting good grades are two challenges that students encounter in college. In addition to term-related challenges, many students also face the challenge of graduating from college on time.

Whether it's because of financial reasons or career plans, or both, it's important for some students to graduate from college within a certain number of years. The following tips offer ways college students can better their chances of graduating from college on time.

Make a Plan

When beginning college, it's important to make a graduation plan. This plan should list all of the general education courses and major courses that are needed to graduate. Once a student knows which courses are required, he or she can then research specific stipulations associated with each course, such as those courses that are only offered during certain terms and those courses that have prerequisite courses attached to them.

Within this plan, it is also beneficial to check if any required courses fulfill more than one graduation requirement. For example, an Introduction to Psychology course might fulfill the requirement for the psychology major, as well as the requirement for the general education's social sciences component.

Meet with an Academic Advisor

Most colleges require students to meet with an academic advisor before registering for courses. This is important, because advisors can help students select courses that fulfill degree requirements. During these visits, students should review their overall plans for graduating on time with their advisors. While it is important to look at the "small picture" for a specific term, it is equally important to look at the "big picture."

Also, an advisor might be able to offer advise on classes that are difficult to register for, including the popular courses that close quickly.

Take Summer School Classes

Sometimes, it's difficult for students to graduate on time because of the number of credit hours they must take to fulfill their degree requirements. Therefore, summer school classes might be a benefit to students who do not take enough credit hours during the regular terms. Most colleges offer summer school classes, and some colleges also offer courses during winter break.

Before registering for a summer-break (or winter-break) course, it's important to meet with an academic advisor. Sometimes there are limited courses offered during the summer; therefore, it is important to adjust a college plan around the requirements these courses fulfill.

Additionally, some students who attend four-year colleges may choose to take summer school classes at nearby community colleges. They benefit from this not only academically but also financially, because the tuition for community colleges is often much less than that of the four-year school's tuition. However, it's important to meet with an academic advisor before registering for summer school at another institution. The advisor can verify whether or not those credits will transfer.

Look for Fun, Easy Ways to Earn Credits

In addition to traditional courses, many colleges also offer one- and two-credit courses, such as through P.E. courses, performing arts courses, and various seminars. These courses might fulfill elective requirements, as well as some general education requirements.

One- and two-credit courses might also provide less work for students – and they might also be a lot fun. And, most importantly, the addition of an extra credit hour, or two, each term can add up in a significant way.

Graduating from college on time is often a challenge for many college students. However, if college students make a plan, meet with an advisor, take summer school courses, and look for easy ways to earn college credits, then they will find it much easier to graduate on time.
