College spring break is a rite of passage for many college students. The week-long break is a time to party and visit warm, sandy beaches in Florida, Texas, and Mexico.

Spring break is a week-long recess for North American colleges and universities. Depending on the region, the activity also goes by the names reading week or March break. Spring break is often marked by traveling to warmer climates like Florida, Texas, or Mexico.

Also marked by excessive drinking, dancing, and wild behavior, spring break grew into its current form over the latter half of the twentieth century. With ties to Greek and Roman spring celebration, spring break as a trip to warmer climates took shape in the 1930s.

Spring Break History

Spring break is commonly thought of as a period when college students head to warmer regions for a week of partying and merriment. The concept is connected with Greeks and Romans who celebrated spring fertility through post-winter partying.

According to the March 30, 2009 Time article, "A Brief History of Spring Break", writer Lauren Bohn describes the modern day migration to sandy beaches as first occurring in the 1930s. The activity stemmed from college swim training which took place in Florida.

In 1936, Colgate University swim coach Sam Ingram traveled to Fort Lauderdale to train at the Casino Pool. It's reported the city marketed itself through hosting a swim training program to lure more students south and in 1938 hosted over 300 college swimmers.

By the 1960s, students of all types traveled to Florida for partying. Over the years, other warm climates have become home to spring break students, including Cancun Mexico and Corpus Christi, Texas.
